Testing Three Material Combinations in One System

One persistent challenge in architectural design is managing the relationship between acoustic performance and visual expression. For years, these have often felt in tension: acoustic materials tend toward utilitarian appearance, while visually distinctive finishes frequently lack the sound-absorbing properties necessary for pleasant interior environments.

This tension is especially acute in retail, where both acoustic control and aesthetic coherence directly affect the customer experience.

Understanding Acoustic Performance in Finish Materials

Sound absorption depends on several factors: material density, surface porosity, air gaps, and backing composition

What Performance Finishes Means

  • Perforated Metal surfaces create acoustic opportunity through their geometry. The holes allow sound to pass through the surface, where backing materials can absorb it. The key to acoustic performance lies in what sits behind the perforated layer. Thicker felt backing usually two to four inches absorbs more sound across a broader frequency range.

  • 3D Felt is inherently acoustic because of its fiber structure. Sound is absorbed as it passes through the material's matrix of fibers rather than bouncing off the surface.

  • Acoustic Solid Panels are made from natural sand and mineral particles bonded with a precisely controlled coating, these panels deliver the aesthetic appeal of architectural stone or marble while achieving exceptional acoustic performance (NRC 0.70–0.90). The panels are translucent, allowing them to be backlit for added visual dimension.

The most effective acoustic environments result from understanding function and choosing finishes accordingly. A retail store environment, for example, requires acoustic control that supports customer experience, reducing noise from hard surfaces while maintaining an appealing, sophisticated aesthetic that reflects the brand.
